Elements making NYPA’s Supplier Diversity Program a successful

When M/WBEs succeed, we all succeed. Stimulating the economy works for us all and economic development is part of NYPA’s mission. Using M/WBEs also affects our bottom line by increasing our pool of competitive, qualified firms providing goods and services to NYPA. Greater competition means more favorable prices and that’s good for all consumers whether you’re an electric utility like NYPA, a law firm or a mom & pop store. It spurs competition, and encourages creativity and innovation in how we structure or award contracts to increase M/WBE participation.

The objective of the Supplier Diversity Program is to continually increase the amount of business we do with M/WBEs by leveling the playing field to make it more competitive and fostering an environment for repeat business. Integral to our success at achieving this goal is NYPA’s ability to have a positive effect on key factors that attract qualified and responsive M/WBE participation in NYPA’s purchasing opportunities.

Debra J. White - Supplier Diversity Program Manager, New York Power Authority

Ms. White manages the Power Authority’s multi-million dollar supplier diversity program to ensure that M/WBEs actively and successfully participate in NYPA’s procurement of goods and services, construction contracts and professional services. She is also responsible for negotiating with subcontractors, evaluating compliance for prime contracts and monitoring labor force requirements. As part of NYPA’s outreach to the M/WBE community, she hosts NYPA’s annual purchasing exchanges which have resulted in both numerous contract opportunities for M/WBEs and expanded vendor pools for participating private corporations and public agencies. These efforts have resulted in hundreds of millions in NYPA business, and other significant business opportunities, for these firms. Ms. White has been instrumental in the creation and implementation of the many policies and programs that have developed into NYPA’s award-winning supplier diversity program.
